Day 1 –
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
Since I tout myself as a travel blog, I felt like this was most appropriate to start. I have loved this quote for a very long time – even as I was vegetating in my own little corner acting out my favorite travel dreams from my armchair. I actually put this quote as my signature on my gmail account and it’s always stuck there, inspiring me. Sort of like having it as a tattoo, but not. It tells me that I’m doing something right when I do something different.
There are two striking points that he makes in this quote, one is very obvious and the other is a little more subtle. The first is obviously that the more you travel and the more you come across those who have lived a different life than you the more you grow to respect different points of view.
The second was the little part about vegetating. He could have used any word in place of that: staying, sitting, living, etc. But vegetating – I imagine someone sitting lazily in a chair becoming larger and larger, their body turning into a giant squishy ball. Except I can’t imagine them floating away like Marjorie Dursely (HP, FTW). I imagine Twain believing that not getting out and exploring would be equal to becoming vegetable-like.
I am now supposed to nominate three bloggers to carry on this mission, if you chose to accept it:
